Our Last Zoom as Area Advisers

Last night was a tough one.  Emotionally, we cracked a little.  The spirit was so strong and the feelings of gratitude for this calling as Area Advisers to all our Stake Presidencies in the field of Family History were so thick in the room, we could hardly breathe, much less go ahead with the lesson - which was - 

"Putting Christ First in your Temple Worship"

So, we hope that marvelous lesson will encourage you to help people on both sides of the veil, meaning...

1) Your relatives here on earth right now need to have their voices, images, and stories captured for their  posterity.  You can verify the stories later by producing any documents from their timeline.  Then upload what you have found to your Memories section of that person.  When you tag them and other family members, you will share precious insights into your family's history.

2) Your ancestors on the other side....past the veil...or those in heaven are equally important.  Interview family members about their stories from these ancestors.  Document your findings in the Memories section.  

3) Take that member to the Temple.  Take the honor of being their first escort thru the Temple with loving seriousness.  You are preserving this person and saving them.

4) Realize that in capturing the honor of doing their work for them vicariously as their proxy is such a privilege - keep yourself worthy to keep going back over and over again with new honored guests of honor.

5)  Document your feelings and the story of your work so your children and grandchildren will realize one day the importance of what your are doing now.

We hope you will be happy in whatever you do in the future.  We are so grateful for this calling, you'll see in the video, sometimes we were absolutely speechless for the spirit was affecting us so much for the good we have experienced.  Sorry we are such saps, but the evening, nevertheless, was grand!

I’m adding a possible activity for November. There is an Arts and crafts fair being held at the Mesa history museum. Might be a fun family field trip if someone has gotten an “I -love-my-family’s-journey-to- the- USA” bug and t something on a site, newspaper or blogs , it will find it. After all, what we do is the 3 largest hobbyist activity in the world.

HOW TO PUT CHRIST FIRST...

 

View this email in your browser How to put Christ at the Center of your Temple worship… Suggestions for Successful Worship Begin your day with prayer: to help you put aside the attempts the adversary will try to defeat your goal of going to the temple.   Before you leave home, let Father know how important this is to you:   Just know, that as you enter the HOV lane, someone is going to cut you off, but you do not respond in anger and you are not deterred.  Just know that as you leave the toddler with the babysitter, who just poured a whole box of fish food into the bowl, she has the ability to clean it so you can leave.  On this day, nothing can sway you from your Covenants with the Lord.  You are doing great! When you arrive, say a prayer : before you leave your car make sure you are in tune with the feelings which are appropriate for Temple Worship.  This will clear your mind of any negative or confusing thoughts.   When you get dressed: study the name of the person on your card, and reflect on the ordinance that is provided to you for the redeeming of the dead. We study their lives before we leave using history and their timeline to appreciate all that they endured for us to be here today.   When you perform the ordinance: picture Christ embracing them in your mind. These thoughts are from the Leadership Meeting from Rootstech 2023 We never pick and choose favorites on a whim.  No one is exempt from receiving the blessings of the temple.  We should baptize all of our ancestors and with forgiveness in our hearts, should they have wronged us prior to death, we need to baptize them regardless.  They can choose to accept it or not, and they may have had a change of heart as well.  The Lord said, “10 I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you, it is required to forgive all men.” - Doctrine and Covenants 64:10.  Give that some thought if you have ever said the words, “I refuse to do her work.” All through our lives, we make covenants with the Lord.  Sometimes we have to rededicate our hearts to those promises knowing that when we do our part, He has no recourse but to do His. If we are doing work for them and forgetting to document our families' lives while they are still here, won’t that make it harder once they are gone? If they are here, they can help us find the answers to questions we have.  Do we have their life story written and recorded voices and videos NOW for their posterity?  Have we preserved their stories?  Think of this as you re-read the Prophet’s words above, that “…Any time we do anything  that helps anyone on either side of the veil  to make and keep their Covenants with God, we are helping to gather Israel.” When we go to the temple to do the work we have covenanted with the Lord to do, there is always a thought, “That ancestor is pleased with me because I was obedient and did work that he cannot do while I am on this earth.”  Perhaps our first thought should be, “Christ is pleased with me because I obeyed the Covenants we made to help others on both sides of the veil.” Join us on June 10 at 5 pm for our Zoom.  We would love to hear your thoughts of what we have discussed here.  Perhaps you can enlighten others who are listening and empower them to dedicate themselves to the covenants they have made!  Tonight was Mother's Day Weekend - we did not anticipate many would be able to join us but we are so grateful for the support.  This has been a difficult couple of months.  Karen's hip has been the source of many problems.  She finally started to recover after using a Wound Vacuum to control the bleeding.  We are thankful to you for your prayers, kind messages, cards and thoughtful gestures shown forth during this time.  Last night she accidentally crossed her legs and ended the evening in pain and unable to put weight on it.

This was a great lesson.  We compiled all of our search techniques that we have uncovered over the last 7 years in this calling and make them available to you.  If there is an area you would like some ideas for, please email us at:  naswfamilyhistory@gmail.com

 As as matter of fact one of the people who attended was listening and did what we taught on how to find more stories about his family.  When he tried it during our Zoom, he received at least 12 pages of stories about his heritage and lineage in the Illinois area.

This Saturday night we had our monthly Zoom call - in addition to our own Stakes we represent, we had people from Missouri, Texas, Utah, Arizona, and California - perhaps there were more but we enjoyed their participation.  We discussed the different aspects from putting Christ first in everything we do, to how and which discussion questions to show to our Ward Councils on Family History during the next Bishop's Coordination meeting.

Taking the final road trip to say goodbye....what will you take?

 THE TOUGH PART IS LETTING GO...

Whether we are asking our elders questions, learning from them about mistakes and good choices they made in their lifetime, learning what they might have done if they had another chance, or realizing that Grandma was pretty wise after all and actually had the wisdom to impart during all those stories she had to sit through comments like, "Grandma, you've told that story before, like a bajillion times!"   Did you ever think that as she keeps repeating it, it is her hope that she will impart some of that wisdom to you so that you don't make the same mistake and live to regret it? 

Taking the final road trip to say goodbye… The hardest trip I ever made was this month. I know she will be with Daddy soon. I don't like to see her in pain, and now we find she has cancer of the lungs....98 and still with us. Whether we are asking our elders questions, learning from them about mistakes and good choices they made in their lifetime, learning what they might have done if they had another chance, or realizing that Grandma was pretty wise after all and actually had the wisdom to impart during all those stories she had to sit through comments like, "Grandma, you've told that story before, like a bajillion times!" SATURDAY NIGHT 2/11 Well, just want to thank everyone for their input tonight. I loved hearing all about your families and their traditions. I was grateful to hear you say that you wished you had some of these questions, Jan and Br and Sr Judd. Warren, I want to hear more about the last Lord Kilpatrick. David. We were both impressed that you started asking questions and had documented so much. It was a real eye-opener to those who have younger children now. When I was growing up, my father would come home from his job as a manager of a Safeway meat plant in Vernon, CA pretty tired. There was a nap before dinner then of course, one after. Then it was time for me to go to bed. So there was precious little time for me to get to know his life other than dinner chat. Right before he died he opened up about what had happened during the war. The first item finally cleared up why we couldn’t sit in front of the plane. He felt it was safer. Now he tells me. I got my 7-year-old self up and as usual, “overdressed”…. dressed in my nice blue dress with white gloves, a white fur headband hat, and a fur muff. In those days everyone dressed up to ride a plane. There’s no place in Los Angeles that requires any fashion statement like wearing a dress or suit now to get on a jet. But I had a plan. I wanted to watch the pilot and even though there was no door, you couldn’t do that from the back. Dad felt better with us farther back. The stewardess saw my tear-stained face and brought me to the pilot. I got to sit on his lap and he pulled a set of wings out of his pocket and pinned them on me. Now…..what was Dad’s reason? At FT Benning GA, the soldiers have to train alongside water moccasins, gators, and swamps. His paratrooper unit was ready to make their first jump. The pilot was also training and something went wrong and the plane plummeted downward. Somehow he got an angle where they slapped the ground awfully hard. My dad and his buddy were in the tail section. The last two seats. They watched, horrified as the plane cracked at the tail and separated them from the rest of the platoon and the momentum kept it going as it burst into a ball of flames and careened right down into the swamp. The swamp greedily drank the entire plane. Vanished! No one had a chance to get into some clean clothes or even take off their chute on the hook line. That day he saw all his buddies perish but God spared him and also the guy next to him who only broke his leg. Why? He would spend the rest of his life trying to do good for people who were underprivileged to show his gratitude. So by asking him that question even tho, it was 2006, not 1946, how do you think he felt? Like someone cared? If I had known better or had more time with him I’ll bet he would have sat me down and had a longer chat.
